Why this matters

Think of headings as an outline. The main headline (H1) is the chapter title, H2s are section titles, H3s are subsections. If there are two chapter titles, or a section title appears before any chapter title, or a title is blank — the outline makes no sense, and AI skips to a competitor whose page is organized.

The rule

One H1 per page, at the top. Then H2s in order, then H3s under their H2. No headline should ever be empty.

Do it yourself

Pick your platform. No code needed — you're just changing text styles in the editor.

Wix

  1. Open the editor

Sign in at wix.com, click Edit Site.

  2. Find the extra headlines

Look for any text styled as "Heading 1" besides your main headline — check the logo area and section titles too. Click each one, open the style dropdown in the text toolbar, and change it to Heading 2.

  3. Fix the order

Headlines should step down in order: H1, then H2, then H3. If an H3 appears right after the H1 with no H2 between them, change it to H2.

  4. Delete blank headlines

If any text box is empty or contains only spaces, click it and press Delete.

  5. Publish

    Click Publish in the top-right.

Squarespace

  1. Open the editor

Sign in, click Edit in the top-left.

  2. Fix the extra H1s

Click each headline, then the format dropdown above the text (it shows "Heading 1", "Heading 2", etc.). Keep exactly one Heading 1 — change the rest to Heading 2.

  3. Fix the order and blanks

Headings should step down: H1 → H2 → H3. Change any out-of-order ones, and delete any empty text blocks.

  4. Save

    Click Save in the top-left.

WordPress

  1. Open the page

Go to Pages → All Pages, hover the page, click Edit.

  2. Check each heading block

Click each headline. In the block toolbar, the heading level shows as "H1", "H2", etc. Keep one H1 (your main headline). Change extras to H2, fix any that skip a level, and delete empty heading blocks.

  3. Update

    Click Update in the top-right.

Shopify

  1. Open the theme editor

Go to Online Store → Themes, click Customize.

  2. Fix section headings

Click through your sections. Most themes let you set the heading style per section — make sure only one section uses the largest heading ("Heading 1" or "H1") style and the rest step down sensibly. Empty heading fields: clear them.

  3. Save

    Click Save in the top-right.

After publishing

Run a new CrawlReady scan. The structure check reads your headings fresh each time — once there's one H1, ordered headings, and no blanks, the flag clears.
